Former 1st round pick Chris Williams was released yesterday shortly following the recently re-acquired Kahlil Bell’s equally unceremonious dumping.
Both players were inactive for their last game against Jacksonville. Bell once again wanted to go somewhere where he would get reps, Williams’ descent has been longer and more awkward. He seemed upbeat when asked by reporters:
"It seemed to be I was never the guy Tice wanted in a lot of ways," Williams said. "I wanted to be starting. Felt like I could start.
"Now, I will get an opportunity to play somewhere, and I’m excited about that. The Bears are a good team. They will do well and I will miss the guys. It sucks being released, but sitting on the bench here for the whole year wasn’t going to help me in free agency. Now, I’ll get a chance somewhere else."
These moves opened up roster spots which were filled by free agents TE Brody Eldridge and former Bear CB Zack Bowman. Eldridge is a blocking specialist and with cornerback depth pretty solid it would appear the team is re-evaluating their special teams depth chart.
So long, Chris.
